While we understand that when one’s child has cancer and does not seem to be getting better one is desperate enough to try ANYTHING, one should be aware of some of the cancer myths that are out there such as “Cancer is a Fungus – and Sodium Bicarbonate is the Cure.”
This rather strange and frankly ridiculous “theory” seems to originate in the fact that “cancer is always white.”
Let’s just put this myth to rest once and for all – cancer cells are clearly not fungal in origin, and cancer isn’t always white.
Sodium Bicarbonate reduces stomach acid. It is used as an antacid to treat heartburn, indigestion, and upset stomach. Sodium bicarbonate is a very quick-acting antacid; it should,  however, be used only for temporary relief. Sodium Bicarbonate DOES NOT cure cancer!

Proponents of the “Cancer is a Fungus” theory say that cancer is caused by infection by the candida fungus, and that tumours are actually the body’s attempt at protecting itself from this infection.
There is, however, absolutely no scientific proof that this is true. There is plenty of evidence going back as far as 1902, that cancer starts from faults our own cells.
Candida also affects plenty of perfectly healthy people, and is part of the very normal array of microbes that live in (and on) all of us. Our immune system generally keeps candida in check, but infections can get more serious in people with compromised immune systems, such as those who are HIV-positive or those who have cancer.
Proponents of treating cancer with baking soda say that the ‘simple solution’ is apparently to inject tumours with sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), which is totally ridiculous because this cannot even treat proven fungal infections, let alone cancer. In actual fact, there is actually good evidence that high doses of sodium bicarbonate can lead to serious – even fatal – consequences.
There have to date been no published clinical trials of sodium bicarbonate as a treatment for cancer.
Due to the fact that the body strongly resists attempts to change its pH, generally by getting rid of bicarbonate through the kidneys, there is also a risk that doses large enough to significantly affect the pH around a tumour might cause a serious condition known as alkalosis, a condition in which the body fluids have excess base (alkali), and which can lead to various nasty symptoms.
Please remember, no matter how desperate you are to do something for your Child with Cancer, using other types of alternative treatments such as Baking Soda must never be done without first discussing it thoroughly with your child’s paediatric oncology team.
