“Nelson Mandela International Day” was formally declared by the United Nations General Assembly in November 2009.
“Mandela Day” is a global call to action that celebrates the idea that each individual has the power to transform the world, the ability to make an impact. Every year on the 18th of July, individuals and organisations around the world celebrate the late Nelson Mandela’s birthday by doing good for 67 minutes; 1 minute for each of the 67 years that Nelson Mandela fought for social justice. This is generally done through volunteering and community service.
The event will take place:
From 11h00 until 16h00
On Friday 18th July
At Mandela Rhodes Place Hotel and Spa Atrium in St George’s Mall
The hotel has joined forces with Bush Radio 89.5FM and Fair Cape Dairies to support the Little Fighters Cancer Trust, and in the spirit of ubuntu is inviting everyone to come along to the Atrium at the hotel and either knit or crochet a square, help sew the squares together, donate some fabric or drop off blankets to assist those in need. The squares will then be sewn into blankets or quilts and delivered to the Trust.
To join the community knitathon all you need to do is bring your needles and spend your #67minutes knitting or crocheting a 15 x 15cm square (just cast on 30 stitches) or bring fabric cut to the same size.
Donations of blankets can also be dropped off at the Atrium if you are unable to join the knitters! In addition, donations of activity books and crayons would be welcomed and can be dropped off at the same time. These will be taken to the children in hospital.
Fair Cape Dairies will provide some of their delicious yoghurts and chocolate mousse and the Hotel will provide coffee.
Mandela Rhodes Place Hotel and Spa is currently also running a competition for a night’s stay on a bed and breakfast basis at the hotel.
You could also win some fabulous Fair Cape Dairies hampers. All you need to do is to make sure that your contact details are attached to the donation.
Listen to Bush Radio 89.5fm for Fair Cape giveaways and an additional chance to win a two night stay at Mandela Rhodes Place Hotel.
All proceeds in aid of the Little Fighters Cancer Trust.
For those Supporters not in Cape Town, but who would like to take part, you can make a donation of R67, referenced with #67MinutesFund, directly to LFCT.
