bare feet

In the Spirit of Working Together, Little Fighters Cancer Trust joined the Drakenstein Transformation Team in their Barefoot for a Day event in 2013.

The idea behind the Barefoot for a Day initiative is to inspire the community to Give and to Work Together. People from the community are encouraged to go to school, church or work as per normal, dressing as you would on any other day.

The idea is that you take off the shoes you are wearing and gift it to the project. You then go barefoot for the entire day, as a reminder of how uncomfortable it is for those who do not have the blessing of a pair of shoes. Drakenstein Transformation will collect all the shoes by arrangement, and will distribute to those in the community who have a need for shoes.

Although this project does supply shoes to a wide variety of community initiatives, projects and organisations, the philosophy it works at building is, that it does not matter who you are, you do have something to give. Whether it is the shoes, or even your time in helping to sort out the shoes for distribution, we need to change the mind-set of South Africans to take action.

The Little Fighters Cancer Trust, with the blessings of Drakenstein Transformation, is going to adopt and adapt this basic idea slightly, keeping in mind the specific needs of Children with Cancer.

LFCT rarely distributes second-hand goods to Children with Cancer as their immune systems are depleted due to the harsh cancer treatments.

We will therefore be asking you to go barefoot on March 1st annually and to pledge the purchase of a new pair of children’s shoes for us to distribute to our Little Fighters in hospital, at home and in Places of Safety.

The original aim of this project was to collect 100 new pairs of shoes, which we wanted to deliver to the Paediatric Oncology Ward at St Joseph’s Home in Cape Town to offer some relief to this amazing institution, which houses up to 80 Children with Cancer annually – we exceeded our target by far!

And the project has just grown from there…

It takes only that very first person to take action…and many will follow.

While donations of shoes are most welcome,  we also accept financial contributions because that way we can utilise our NPO and PBO status and being able to buy in bulk with sufficient funds in hand, we can haggle with stores for discounts and better deals.

Financial donations also allow us to be sure that we are able to buy the right sizes and types of shoes that we need for our Little Fighters, thereby ensuring that each Little Fighter get the exact shoe they need and which fits them perfectly.

Please ensure that all shoes/donations reach us by 1 April so as to afford us sufficient time to sort & pack/purchase shoes in time for our deliveries all across South Africa.
